Health Psychology Introduction Health psychologists range from a wide area of careers and fields. They focus on how health and illnesses are effected by factors such as psychology, biology and social factors. Health psychologists also seek to answer, â€Å"how people cope with chronic illness (both their own and others’)† (Lyons, Chamberlain, 2006, p. 6). Health psychologists research on different ways to â€Å"overcome illnesses more quickly, and how to change people’s attitude† on health problems such as smoking, stress management and weight loss. (Kuther, 2006, p. 5) Professionals studying in the health subfield of psychology work in research settings like universities and schools, as well as clinics and hospitals. (Kuther, 2006). The duties of health psychologists are to answer controversial health questions and concerns as detailed by Lyons and Chamberlain (2006) in Health Psychology: A Critical Introduction: Is psychology relevant to how we interpret sensations in our bodies? How do you know when that strange feeling in your throat is actually a ‘symptom’ that might require you to go to the doctor? SLINGSHOT CONTRIBUTOR: Phil Loria This week I will discuss recent developments with Eli Lilly (LLY) and BioDelivery Sciences (BDSI) that have caught the attention of many biotech investors. On Tuesday Lilly announced that they are changing the endpoints in their Phase III trial (EXPEDITION3) evaluating Solanezumab as a therapy for mild Alzheimer s dementia, prodromal Alzheimer s dementia, and preclinical Alzheimer s disease. Originally the trial had co-primary endpoints of cognition and function; it will now use cognition as the single primary endpoint with functional outcomes being used as key secondary endpoints. This is a surprising move because it goes against regulatory guidance and was done without approval from the FDA. The trial is well underway with final results expected to come in the fourth quarter. Amending primary endpoints this late in a program without advice from regulators is almost unheard of, and it certainly raises a lot of questions about the trial. Although there is no cure for Alzheimer s, there are several approved drugs that are used to help patients with cognition and function. In their last release from a pre-specified secondary analysis of the Phase III trials, the data suggested that (Solanezumab) had an effect that is consistent with slowing progression of disease by modifying the underlying disease progression. In the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, readers are shown the contrast between one’s personal desires and public desires or one’s good side and evil side. These are the things that help stimulate the psychological development of a person and are what keeps us humans balanced, personality wise. However, when one denies the significance of this by repressing them, things can definitely go wrong. Readers can apply this knowledge into one of the major characters, Dr. Henry Jekyll, who finds the need to repress his darker side due to fear of crossing social expectations. Upon doing so, Jekyll slowly becomes selfish, and full of pride. Also, the purpose of the potion he creates to help him transform into his evil doppelganger , Mr. Hyde, ultimately fails when he finds himself having to repress Hyde as well. Lastly, Jekyll’s repression also leads to the unfortunate end of the book, the disappearance both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hy de. Therefore, through Dr. Jekyll’s character, Stevenson proves that repressing emotions or desires does not make them fade away; they will eventually come up again stronger than before and can dominate a person completely. To begin with, the Victorian society is well known for its extremely strict etiquette and the expectations it has when it comes to manners. Monets use of color Essay Monets use of color along with use of intricate brush strokes and composition is outstanding. The vast variations of brush strokes and color placement techniques are what make his work so unique and individual. Grand Canal, Venice, 1908 is a prime example of Monets talents in these areas. The structure of the painting is very loose. There are few hard lines in the composition that represents solid structure. The curves in conjunction with the shades of color as well as light usage give the piece a mirage-like effect. It is easy to imagine Monets vantage point while he was painting the picture by the way the composition is set up. One can tell he was looking towards the buildings on the other side of water because its obvious that the building are being reflected as well as the wooden poles sticking out of the water. It is quite evident that Monet is observing a sunset and that he is painting quickly to capture the full effect of light during this short period of the day with the study of light being the main focus in this work. Shadow also plays a large part in the make up the painting. Monet uses an even tonality of blues, lavenders, oranges and pinks to create the buildings across the water, thus showing the sunlight reflecting off the sides of them. Its quite amazing how he uses many different colors to create one large color. For instance, in the sky he uses a mixture of greens, pinks, oranges and blues to create the feeling of dusk as the sun slowly sets to the right of the picture. In the far edge of the water he uses greens and blues with a hint of lavender here and there to show the darkness of the water behind the buildings where the sunlight isnt reaching. When the water comes closer to the bottom of the painting there is a heavier use of oranges, yellows and pinks creating a golden mirror-like effect reflecting the light coming off of the buildings. At this point it is hard to determine if the sunlight is actually striking the surface of the water or if it is just the reflection of the sun off of the buildings alone. Once one looks at the poles sticking out of the water its easier to determine if the sun is hitting the water or not. It must be hitting a good portion of the water because only the closest pole is dark, with no sun hitting it, but the poles which are farther away have light, then again it may just be the reflection of the light off of the buildings. This is why the painting has such a mirage-like effect because the viewer cannot really decipher what he or she is supposed to perceive the work as. The actual form of the building is less evident due to the brilliant atmosphere of the painting making it quite clear that Monets main concern with this piece, as well as many of his others, is light. How he uses color to express his concern for light is outstanding. In this particular piece Monet uses sketch-like brush strokes to create the main objects of the scene. The water consists of numerous horizontal brush stokes in varying color to create the look of reflection. The buildings are more blended and the use of impasto is less evident mainly in the sky. The surface of the painting from the upper parts of the building to the top of the canvas gets smoother as the eye rises. The layering of the colors in the water and heavier strokes of paint allow Monet to create the reflectiveness he is trying to accomplish in order to portray the time of day. The use of smaller strokes and lighter colors over the heavier strokes and darker colors strengthens the effect of the sunlight on the water. The same holds true in the rest of the painting. The water is especially intriguing. Monet uses such a vast array of colors mixed together to create the reflective aspect he is trying to portray. It looks as if he started with the darker colors along the edge of the buildings working his way toward the bottom of the canvas. The brush strokes look very quick and abrupt as if he was painting hastily. Once the bluish tones of the water were established Monet continues to work his way towards the bottom of the canvas using layers. He moves into greens and continues to layer with lighter and lighter colors working in conjunction with the colors used to create the shadow and light on the buildings above. The pinks and oranges begin to play a key role in portraying the reflection in the top layers on paint. The final layers of paint also tend to be thicker than the rest. This gives the impression no pun intended that this portion of the painting may have been rushed, or maybe even completed at a later time due to the fact that Monet was trying to capture the effects of light at a particular time of day. When one looks much closer it looks as if the actual reflection was captured at the time of the painting on the underneath layers of paint. The more I look at the painting I begin to believe that Monet went over the painting again adding the thicker, smaller strokes of varying color in order to accent the rest of the painting. These particular details seem to occur only in the water and seem to have taken some undetermined length of time to think about it. However, the length of time taken seems to be greater than them amount of time Monet had to paint since the time of day he is working with doesnt allow much time for thinking. These particular techniques seem to be very effective and appropriate for the subject. Monet is basically painting a study of light in this piece. The varying brush strokes and wildly variable use of color brings out the effect of light in this piece magnificently. Though he is using a limited number of colors he can still manage to create a specific tone of color with what he is using. It seems as if Monet is trying to get across to the viewer what it is really like to witness a sunset on the Grande Canal and how fascinating the actual colors are. The view seems to lack a certain crispness though as if the air was heavy or moisture filled, in turn making the building across from him less detailed allowing Monet to focus on the aspect of shadow in the composition instead of being distracted by the detail of the buildings. Prospero And Shakespeare Essay Paper The Tempest is an interesting play written by the famous, William Shakespeare. It is his official and last accomplishment. This play is thought of as one of Shakespeares romance plays. Shakespeare started to write toward the end of his career about magic and fantasy set in far-off lands. These realms that he created are written about in his plays. This particular play is famous for his usage of magic, which is carried through by the Duke of Milan (a state in Italy), who is also known as Prospero the magician. Prospero rules Shakespeares creation of an island set far away from all realities and creates ruckus for all that land on the island. Prospero who is on an island with his daughter Miranda and some servants to assist with magic is stranded but he uses his magical powers to his advantage. Prospero is on this remote island because his brother Antonio usurped his position of Dukedom. His evil brother sent Prospero and his baby daughter sailing into sea with a boat full of wholes. Antonio sent Prospero away in such an abused boat that he assumes that Prospero had to died at sea, but this is not so. A kind-hearted man named Gonzalo changes Prospero and his daughters fate and Prospero in return uses his magic on the island to make it some what livable for them. The play starts out so happily but then Prospero is offered a chance to use his magic and take revenge upon his evil, brother Antonio who took his place in Milan, Italy as the duke to rule. Antonio happens to set sail in waters that are close to Prosperos island. His servant, Ariel who is an airy spirit, which Prospero rescued from imprisonment and now controls can fly, play magical music, misdirect people, turn invisible, and create storms and fire, among other abilities. Also Ariels gender is uncertain and probably indeterminate; it is referred to sometimes as he, but also takes on female forms (for instance, the nymph of I. ii. 301 and the harpy of III. iii. 53ff) and spends much time invisible. It is probably simplest to think of Ariel as androgynous-that is, neither male nor female) So Prospero and Ariel conjure up a huge storm (the tempest), and try and steer the ship towards the island so that his daughter and himself can return back to civilization. The ship wrecks near the island and Prospero uses his magic to make sure that all the passengers manage to make it safely ashore. Many interesting figures wash upon shore. The characters basically divide up into two groups, the protagonists and the antagonists. Antonio is an antagonist. He is the evil brother of Prospero, from whom he usurped the position of Duke of Milan twelve years ago. He also plots with Sebastian to kill Alonso and Gonazalo. Alsonso, the King of Naples is one of the figures belonging to the protagonist group. He was long ago involved in Antonios plot to get rid of Prospero. He is the father of Ferdinand and the heir to the throne and he has a daughter named Claribel, who has just been married to a king fare across the sea. Gonzalo also belongs to the protagonists. But of course because he drinks his plans are not as efficient. Prospero at work with his magic again, casts an enchantment on Alonso, Antonio, and Sebastian to make them immobile with madness, guilt and fear. Meanwhile, Ferdinand and Miranda become engaged, and Prospero uses his magic to give them a beautiful wedding pageant, with spirits taking the form of classical deities. Finally, in the climatic concluding scene, all the characters are brought together once more. Prospero forgives the villains, but reclaims his dukedom from Antonio. Ferdinand and his father Alonso are reunited. Prospero and Miranda plan to set sail back to Naples with the rest, where Miranda will marry Ferdinand and become the future Queen of Naples. And Prosper, finally keeping the promise, which he has been making for ages, sets Ariel free from its servitude to him. Prospero is the main character of The Tempest, he is the most powerful and he manipulates everything. From the start of the play he engineers the tempest that brings the other characters to his island, and after that he uses his magic to control where they go. He can send Ariel to make them fall asleep, freeze them in place, or lead them to wherever he wants them to be. He also seems to have guessed correctly what the psychological reaction of Alonso and the rest would be to Ariels terrifying accusation while in harpy form, and he seems to have known that Miranda and Ferdinand would fall in love. Calibans rebellion took him by surprise, though. I also think that Prospero is like a stand-in for Shakespeare, saying goodbye to his career in the theater using Prosperos magic as a way to refer to the magic of the stage. There are passages in the play, which seem to make connections between Prosperos magic and the magic on the stage. Prosperos power of illusion as being a metaphor for the illusion of theater, and his magic and power over other people may be linked to the power, which the playwright himself-Shakespeare-has in creating worlds and characters.
