SLINGSHOT CONTRIBUTOR: Phil Loria This week I will discuss recent developments with Eli Lilly (LLY) and BioDelivery Sciences (BDSI) that have caught the attention of many biotech investors. On Tuesday Lilly announced that they are changing the endpoints in their Phase III trial (EXPEDITION3) evaluating Solanezumab as a therapy for mild Alzheimer s dementia, prodromal Alzheimer s dementia, and preclinical Alzheimer s disease. Originally the trial had co-primary endpoints of cognition and function; it will now use cognition as the single primary endpoint with functional outcomes being used as key secondary endpoints. This is a surprising move because it goes against regulatory guidance and was done without approval from the FDA. The trial is well underway with final results expected to come in the fourth quarter. Amending primary endpoints this late in a program without advice from regulators is almost unheard of, and it certainly raises a lot of questions about the trial. Although there is no cure for Alzheimer s, there are several approved drugs that are used to help patients with cognition and function. In their last release from a pre-specified secondary analysis of the Phase III trials, the data suggested that (Solanezumab) had an effect that is consistent with slowing progression of disease by modifying the underlying disease progression. In the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, readers are shown the contrast between one’s personal desires and public desires or one’s good side and evil side. These are the things that help stimulate the psychological development of a person and are what keeps us humans balanced, personality wise. However, when one denies the significance of this by repressing them, things can definitely go wrong. Readers can apply this knowledge into one of the major characters, Dr. Henry Jekyll, who finds the need to repress his darker side due to fear of crossing social expectations. Upon doing so, Jekyll slowly becomes selfish, and full of pride. Also, the purpose of the potion he creates to help him transform into his evil doppelganger , Mr. Hyde, ultimately fails when he finds himself having to repress Hyde as well. Lastly, Jekyll’s repression also leads to the unfortunate end of the book, the disappearance both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hy de. Therefore, through Dr. Jekyll’s character, Stevenson proves that repressing emotions or desires does not make them fade away; they will eventually come up again stronger than before and can dominate a person completely. Monets use of color Essay Monets use of color along with use of intricate brush strokes and composition is outstanding. The vast variations of brush strokes and color placement techniques are what make his work so unique and individual. Grand Canal, Venice, 1908 is a prime example of Monets talents in these areas. The structure of the painting is very loose. There are few hard lines in the composition that represents solid structure. The curves in conjunction with the shades of color as well as light usage give the piece a mirage-like effect. It is easy to imagine Monets vantage point while he was painting the picture by the way the composition is set up. One can tell he was looking towards the buildings on the other side of water because its obvious that the building are being reflected as well as the wooden poles sticking out of the water. It is quite evident that Monet is observing a sunset and that he is painting quickly to capture the full effect of light during this short period of the day with the study of light being the main focus in this work. Shadow also plays a large part in the make up the painting. Monet uses an even tonality of blues, lavenders, oranges and pinks to create the buildings across the water, thus showing the sunlight reflecting off the sides of them. Its quite amazing how he uses many different colors to create one large color. For instance, in the sky he uses a mixture of greens, pinks, oranges and blues to create the feeling of dusk as the sun slowly sets to the right of the picture. In the far edge of the water he uses greens and blues with a hint of lavender here and there to show the darkness of the water behind the buildings where the sunlight isnt reaching. When the water comes closer to the bottom of the painting there is a heavier use of oranges, yellows and pinks creating a golden mirror-like effect reflecting the light coming off of the buildings. At this point it is hard to determine if the sunlight is actually striking the surface of the water or if it is just the reflection of the sun off of the buildings alone. Once one looks at the poles sticking out of the water its easier to determine if the sun is hitting the water or not. It must be hitting a good portion of the water because only the closest pole is dark, with no sun hitting it, but the poles which are farther away have light, then again it may just be the reflection of the light off of the buildings. This is why the painting has such a mirage-like effect because the viewer cannot really decipher what he or she is supposed to perceive the work as. The actual form of the building is less evident due to the brilliant atmosphere of the painting making it quite clear that Monets main concern with this piece, as well as many of his others, is light. How he uses color to express his concern for light is outstanding. In this particular piece Monet uses sketch-like brush strokes to create the main objects of the scene. The water consists of numerous horizontal brush stokes in varying color to create the look of reflection. The buildings are more blended and the use of impasto is less evident mainly in the sky. The surface of the painting from the upper parts of the building to the top of the canvas gets smoother as the eye rises. The layering of the colors in the water and heavier strokes of paint allow Monet to create the reflectiveness he is trying to accomplish in order to portray the time of day. The use of smaller strokes and lighter colors over the heavier strokes and darker colors strengthens the effect of the sunlight on the water. He tends to follow through with the stroke and use less paint to cover more area at a time, unlike the fast, thicker strokes used in the water. Monet is a genius when it comes to using many different colors and brush strokes to create one specific tone of a color and create specific effects with those colors. For example, from a distance the largest pole coming out of the water seems to be mainly brownish-blue color but up close it is actually a conglomeration of purples, greens, reds, oranges and even some black. The same holds true in the rest of the painting. The water is especially intriguing. Monet uses such a vast array of colors mixed together to create the reflective aspect he is trying to portray. It looks as if he started with the darker colors along the edge of the buildings working his way toward the bottom of the canvas. The brush strokes look very quick and abrupt as if he was painting hastily. Once the bluish tones of the water were established Monet continues to work his way towards the bottom of the canvas using layers. He moves into greens and continues to layer with lighter and lighter colors working in conjunction with the colors used to create the shadow and light on the buildings above. The pinks and oranges begin to play a key role in portraying the reflection in the top layers on paint. The final layers of paint also tend to be thicker than the rest. This gives the impression no pun intended that this portion of the painting may have been rushed, or maybe even completed at a later time due to the fact that Monet was trying to capture the effects of light at a particular time of day. When one looks much closer it looks as if the actual reflection was captured at the time of the painting on the underneath layers of paint. The more I look at the painting I begin to believe that Monet went over the painting again adding the thicker, smaller strokes of varying color in order to accent the rest of the painting. These particular details seem to occur only in the water and seem to have taken some undetermined length of time to think about it. However, the length of time taken seems to be greater than them amount of time Monet had to paint since the time of day he is working with doesnt allow much time for thinking. These particular techniques seem to be very effective and appropriate for the subject. Monet is basically painting a study of light in this piece. The varying brush strokes and wildly variable use of color brings out the effect of light in this piece magnificently. Though he is using a limited number of colors he can still manage to create a specific tone of color with what he is using. It seems as if Monet is trying to get across to the viewer what it is really like to witness a sunset on the Grande Canal and how fascinating the actual colors are. The view seems to lack a certain crispness though as if the air was heavy or moisture filled, in turn making the building across from him less detailed allowing Monet to focus on the aspect of shadow in the composition instead of being distracted by the detail of the buildings. The same can be said about the water. Finally, in the climatic concluding scene, all the characters are brought together once more. Prospero forgives the villains, but reclaims his dukedom from Antonio. Ferdinand and his father Alonso are reunited. Prospero and Miranda plan to set sail back to Naples with the rest, where Miranda will marry Ferdinand and become the future Queen of Naples. And Prosper, finally keeping the promise, which he has been making for ages, sets Ariel free from its servitude to him. Prospero is the main character of The Tempest, he is the most powerful and he manipulates everything. The notions of their aristocratic origins assured that the belle would be protected from reality, championed, and wooed. In addition, the realities of plantation life were well suited to the idealization of women, since women were kept isolated from the world by the nature of their life. The lucky, young girl had few tasks except to be pretty and charming. After marriage, she was expected to become a hard-working matron who supervised, nursed and mothered (Avia, WebRing). To explore this intentional structure of consciousness, Husserl attempts to develop a method to reveal the complex contents of consciousness as clearly as we experience a simple sense perception. But even a sense perception comes to us amid a lifetime of assumptions and beliefs about the cause and context of the perception. Husserl tries to work out a step-bystep series of phenomenological or eidetic "reductions" in which reality, as presented in our "naive" experience, is bracketed in hopes of bringing forth the structures that constitute phenomena (Hart 644). Husserl finds that the uniqueness of consciousness lies in the fact that the phenomena are "constituted" by conscious activities regarding the phenomena's essences (or meanings). Husserl does not mean to say that things are imaginary inventions. Entities are not created by consciousness, but their essences are constructed from the hyle, the stuff presented to the synthetic character of transcendental consciousness. Husserl describes these activities as meaning intentions of consciousness and fulfilling intentions of phenomena. For example, my awareness of my desk is not identical to the desk itself. The desk is solid, rectangular, and several feet wide, but my idea of the desk possesses none of those qualities. Although the hardness and size of the desk cannot physically enter my consciousness, they are somehow presented to me from the stuff of my idea of the desk (Hart 645). Husserl shows that this presentation is an exceedingly complex activity in which sense data take many forms and occur within a complicated array of potential sensations. But these sense data would be meaningless without the meaning intentions, the noetic activity of consciousness that assigns appropriate categories suc h as substance, quality, and explains the relations as the shape, size, of a material object; that is, noetic activities constitute the "whatness" of what is intended by consciousness (Schrag 278). For Husserl, the "detachment" proposed in any judgment, then, is the agreement of what is meant and what is given in fulfilling intentions. The difference between Husserl's transcendentalism and Heidegger's is found in the latter's attempt to express the way phenomena are constituted in terms deeper than Husserl's transcendental consciousness. (Hart 645). Husserl's attempt is far too idealistic, subjectivistic, and egoistic for Heidegger. In considering consciousness to provide the fundamental, presuppositionless beginning of philosophy, Husserl places himself squarely within the Cartesian tradition that takes the cogito to be prior to what Heidegger considers the ontological structure beneath, the sum. Growing up in the early 1900’s was not easy especially if you were a women and/or black. Hansberry was both and with that, she faced discrimination challenges. As she grew as a women and writer, a person respected her more and saw her for more than her race and the fact she was a woman. Throughout her life, she fought for her rights and stood up for a cause, until her early tragic death from cancer. Lorraine Hansberry grew up during the American Civil Rights movement, managed to overcome the hard times of segregation, the lack of women’s rights, and the harsh criticism of the critics to become a strong writer, which she used to make a difference for African Americans through all her writings. #1 Hansberry grew up in trying times with her two parents, from the beginning she wanted to make a difference. â€Å"Lorrain Vivian Hansberry was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1930, to Carl A. Hansberry and Nanny Perry Hansberry and was the youngest of four children.†(#4) â€Å"Throughout her childhood, thanks to her family’s deep involvement in the black community, she was surrounded by black politics, culture, and economics. When I was a kid, my super hero was Superman, I kind of admired him because I thought it would be cool to be able to fly and to have super-human strength, but the main reason why I liked Superman is because he helped people, no matter what. According to Times Magazine, we have become a society that is centered on self, self-gratification, self-motivation, self-indulgence, and it has been a driving force in developed countries since decades now; and as a result, we are witnesses to the slow death of the Hero.Today I want to tell you a little bit about how we define what a hero is , what it takes to be a hero, and how you and I can help refresh the effects of heroisme. So lets start with how we define what a heroe is. The definitions of a hero, according to â€Å"El Libro de los Heroes† says that â€Å"A hero is a person noted for feets of courage and ability of purpose, specially the one who risks or sacrifices his or her life†, but it goes on to say that its a person no tused for special achievement on a particular field, such as the heroes of medicine.Basically, agreeing with the â€Å"World Hero Association† a hero is someone who for whatever reason or reasons does something for somebody else without thinking about themselves, personal gane, and in some cases personal endangerment . So who are these heros? I mean where are they? For real, where are they? Well, we see them everyday. Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, they are doctors, and nurses, and soldiers, firefighters and police officers, but they are also teachers, and mothers, and fathers, and care-givers, and social-workers, and YOU, that’s right, YOU.You have the potential to be a hero, you have what it takes to be a hero. You see, comic books mostly represent exagerated heroes in capes with symbols, and give them super human powers to make them larger than life, but I’m here to tell you that you don’t really need the cape, its just for show, and you don†™t really need the symbol. We watch movies like The Lorf of The Rings, where, you know, we see all the action going on with the sword play; but sometimes we miss the hidden messages within that say â€Å"you can be a hero even if you think your weak and powerless, you don’t have to jump over tall buildings†.The news only highlights the tramatic acts of heroism like Hurricane Katrina or September 11th, this implies that in order for you to be a hero you must put yourself in danger. But that could not be farther from the truth. The turth is that ANYONE has the potential to be a Hero all you need are two factors One, you need opportunity. And two, you need initiative. So lets say that all of us in this room go out and start looking for those opportunities, and we start noticing things where we can give help, and then we start taking that initiative.We could start the chain reaction that spreads the sparks of heroism. Heroism is a powerful thing. Anyone at anytime and ha s the potential to be a hero anywhere. They can be that person who helps that lady carry her grocers to her car, or the employ who stays late to help a coworker get something done. These are the characteristics of a hero that we should all embrace and be willing to make our own. We need to encourage heroic traits because it will benefit society as a whole, but ourselves as well in the process.At the Berkeley â€Å"THDM† there is an article called â€Å"We can be Heroes† and they wrap it up by saying â€Å"If we loose the ability of imagine ourselves as heroes, our society will be cored for, but if we can re-connect with this ideals, we can create a connection with a hero within ourselves. † So to sum up, the â€Å"Urban Dictionary† defines a hero as someone admired for their achievements and qualities, but what is a hero for you?For me a hero is someone who touches our lives in a personal way and does not do it for themselves. Now more than ever we need h eros, we need to be those heros. And if we start looking for those opportunities and start stepping forward and taking that initiative. We can make the difference. Heros come and heros go, heros die and some heros have grown old, for someone you know and someone you don’t be that hero.
